Giants placed C Daniel Susac on the 10-day injured list with a left knee patella fracture.

Susac is likely to miss the remainder of the season after an MRI revealed a left kneecap fracture that he suffered over the weekend on a foul ball. The 25-year-old backstop was outstanding defensively this season and hit .243/.289/.375 with three homers and two steals in 161 plate appearances over 53 games. He’ll be part of San Francisco’s catching equation for the next few years.

Cavanaugh was scratched due to illness on Friday, though he appeared off the bench both in that game and again on Saturday. The four times on base today pushed his OBP up to .392 in 53 plate appearances. He doesn’t have any extra-base hits yet, but he’s contributing.

Not only did Cavanaugh stick around over veteran Eric Haase with Daniel Susac coming off the IL today, but he got the start over Susac to open the second half. The 24-year-old is hitting .265/.390/.265 in 42 plate appearances since joining the Giants on June 26. He’ll probably spend the rest of the year dueling with Susac for playing time

Giants selected the contract of C Drew Cavanaugh from Triple-A Sacramento.

Cavanaugh, 24, is in tonight’s lineup and might play over Eric Haase most of the time until Daniel Susac returns. He was hitting .311/.449/.550 with nine homers in 54 games between Double- and Triple-A this year, and like Susac, he was a reason why the Giants were comfortable moving on from Patrick Bailey.
