The move is retroactive to July 12th. The Nationals will need to add a back-up catcher to the roster before Friday.

Millas was struck by his own helmet after it fell off on a head-first slide into third base. He was left with a bloody lip and wound up leaving the contest. Keibert Ruiz took over behind the plate.

Ford didn’t help his chances of making the Nationals by going to play for Great Britain in the WBC, but his bigger problem is that Keibert Ruiz has had a nice spring to date. The Nationals weren’t going to keep the 23-year-old Ford as a backup to Ruiz, so he’ll have to wait and see what happens once the games start counting. With Adams also being dropped, it’s clear that Drew Millas will serve as Ruiz’s backup.

Adams has the right to become a free agent, but he’ll probably stay put; he knew this might be coming when he signed a one-year, $1 million contract before the non-tender deadline and the split contract guarantees him a $500,000 salary in the minors. He’ll still have a chance to battle for a backup gig in spring training. As things stand now, it’ll probably be either he or Drew Millas backing up Keibert Ruiz initially, though Harry Ford could spoil things for everyone.

Millas is out for the season with a broken finger sustained on a catcher’s interference.

Millas both fractured and dislocated his finger, and the operation will keep him out with the expectation that he’ll be ready for the start of the 2026 season. The 27-year-old will likely battle for a backup backstop role in spring training.

There’s a pretty good chance Millas won’t be able to return this year, but he’ll miss at least a week and a half after suffering the injury during Wednesday’s game against the Yankees. C.J. Stubbs is up to take Millas’ place on the roster.

The injury occurred when Millas was hit in the finger on a swing from Austin Wells. A trip to the injured list for the 27-year-old backstop seems very likely, but for now Riley Adams has taken over behind the plate.

Millas returns to the big leagues for Tuesday’s game against the Cardinals with starter Keibert Ruiz landing on the concussion injured list. He’ll split the catching duties with Riley Adams moving forward.
