Phillies agreed to terms with INF Edmundo Sosa on a one-year, $4.4 million contract.
At 29, Sosa is now well established as one of the league’s better bench guys; he hit .276/.307/.469 in 261 plate appearances last season and is at .259/.310/.417 over the last five years. The Phillies will again pencil him in as a second baseman against lefties and will know they’re in safe hands if an injury opens up a full-time spot in the infield. Sosa will be eligible for free agency for the first time after the season.
  • PHI Shortstop #33
Edmundo Sosa went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in a win over the Twins.
Sosa took Joe Ryan deep in the fifth inning for his 11th home run of the season. The 29-year-old has filled in admirably when the Phillies have needed him to start, posting a .279/.311/.475 slash line; although, he is far better against left-handed pitching.
  • PHI Shortstop #33
Phillies activated INF Edmundo Sosa from the 10-day injured list.
Sosa ended up missing just over the minimum 10-day requirement while dealing with a right groin strain. The 29-year-old will be a utility option for Philadelphia, and he’ll replace Donovan Walton on the active roster.
  • PHI Shortstop #33
Edmundo Sosa (groin) “should be activated on Tuesday when eligible.”
Sosa went through “strenuous workouts over the weekend” and clearly responded well to them. Trea Turner (hamstring) won’t be ready to return to game action until the end of the week at the earliest. That means that Sosa should have a full series as the starting shortstop for the Phillies.
  • PHI Shortstop #33
Phillies placed INF Edmundo Sosa on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to September 13, with a right groin strain.
Philadelphia is going to give Sosa some extra time off to rest after wrapping up the NL East division title earlier this week. The 29-year-old bench infielder has been battling a lingering groin issue that cropped up last Friday night. He figures to be ready for the postseason.
  • PHI Shortstop #33
Edmundo Sosa (groin) remains out of the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers.
Sosa will sit out his third consecutive game since exiting last Friday’s game with right groin tightness. It’ll be Bryson Stott making another appearance at shortstop in his place with star Trea Turner (hamstring) on the injured list.
  • PHI Shortstop #33
Edmundo Sosa (groin) remains out of the lineup for the second straight game on Sunday against the Royals.
Sosa will get some additional time off to rest after exiting Friday’s game with right groin tightness. The 29-year-old middle infielder figures to be available off the bench, if needed. It’ll be Bryson Stott filling in at shortstop for the third time in the last four games as his absence continues.
  • PHI Shortstop #33
Edmundo Sosa (groin) is out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Royals.
Sosa receives some extra time off to recover after making a precautionary exit from Friday’s game due to right groin tightness. The 29-year-old told reporters he’s feeling better and could be available off the bench at some point this weekend. It’ll be Bryson Stott filling in at shortstop in his place.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman #5
Bryson Stott is batting eighth Tuesday while starting against a lefty for the first time since Aug. 10.
We thought Stott might go into the leadoff spot in Philadelphia with Trea Turner down, but he was seventh with Bryce Harper leading off last night. Tonight, though, he is benefitting from Turner’s absence, as his usual platoon partner, Edmundo Sosa, is starting at shortstop. The Phillies have Harrison Bader leading off tonight against the lefty, with Harper back in his usual third spot.
  • PHI Shortstop #33
The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reports that “the Phillies would appoint Edmundo Sosa as the regular shortstop” in the event that Trea Turner (hamstring) misses time.
It seems very likely that Turner will be sidelined by his recent hamstring injury, but at this point, we don’t know if it will be for a few days or a few weeks. Last season, Turner missed six weeks with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, so these injuries are not new for him. In deeper formats, Sosa would be a solid option given his lineup context, but he’s hitting just .231/.254/.350 against right-handed pitching this season, so he’s more valuable as a short-side platoon bat.
