Reds optioned OF Héctor Rodríguez, SS Edwin Arroyo, INF Leo Balcazar and RHPs Julian Aguiar and Jose Franco to Triple-A Louisville.
Rodríguez is the notable name here for fantasy managers, especially in dynasty formats after slashing .283/.336/.450 with 19 homers and 15 steals across 135 games between two levels to finish last year at Triple-A. The 21-year-old will require some additional seasoning on the doorstep of the majors but he’s a power/speed combo talent worth watching throughout the season. Arroyo is one of Cincinnati’s top prospects entering the year after batting .284/.345/.371 with three homers and 12 steals in 120 games last season for Double-A Chattanooga.

Edwin Arroyo finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a HBP in Tuesday’s Puerto Winter Rican League action.
Arroyo is 10-for-32 with four doubles and a triple so far, giving him a nice .853 OPS in a league in which has just a .617 OPS overall. The 22-year-old should be ready to move up to Triple-A next season after hitting .264/.345/.371 in Double-A in 2025. He’s not a particularly exciting fantasy prospect, since he lacks exceptional power or steal ability, but he might be the Reds’ shortstop in 2027 if the team wants to shift Elly De La Cruz elsewhere.
  • CIN Shortstop #71
Reds selected the contracts of SS Edwin Arroyo, OF Héctor Rodríguez and SS Leo Balcazar from Triple-A Louisville.
The trio will be protected from selection in next month’s Rule 5 Draft. Arroyo is the most prominent inclusion here as one of the better prospect in Cincinnati’s system. The 22-year-old hit .284/.345/.371 with three homers and 12 steals in 120 games last season for Double-A Chattanooga. Rodríguez is one of the more electric talents in the organization, and his long-term fantasy stock surged after he slashed .283/.336/.450 with 19 homers and 15 steals across 135 games between two levels, finishing the year at Triple-A. Balcazar also earns a spot on the 40-man roster after a strong showing recently in the Arizona Fall League.

The Reds are sticking with Elly De La Cruz at shortstop next season, according to general manager Nick Krall.
Krall told MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon that the organization has no plans to move De La Cruz off shortstop despite the dynamic 23-year-old leading the majors in errors during each of the past two seasons. Cincinnati has shortstop prospect Edwin Arroyo on the verge of ascending to the big leagues, but it sounds like the plan is to transition him to another spot eventually. The Reds are going to have another roster logjam on their hands at some point next year — barring an offseason overhaul — with top prospect Sal Stewart ready to join the big-league corner infield mix.
  • CWS Center Fielder #88
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Reds had been working on a trade to acquire OF Luis Robert Jr. from the White Sox.
Rosenthal mentioned that “the teams could not find a middle ground on players or dollars,” which is why the Reds pivoted and signed Austin Hays. Robert will earn $15 million in 2025, and his contract also includes $20 million club options for each of the next two seasons. Rosenthal mentions that each option comes with a $2 million buyout, so Robert is guaranteed at least $17 million per season, which could be seen as a lot to pay for somebody who has only played in more than 100 games once during his career. Of course, that was an elite season. The Reds had discussed infield prospect Edwin Arroyo with the White Sox, but they ultimately “could not get comfortable with the total cost,” so now Chicago will head into spring training with Robert Jr. on their roster.
  • CIN Shortstop #74
Reds SS prospect Edwin Arroyo underwent season-ending left shoulder surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn labrum.
It’s pretty much the worst-case scenario outcome after Arroyo suffered a left shoulder injury earlier this month just prior to the Spring Breakout showcase. The 20-year-old shortstop was likely to open the year at Double-A Chattanooga, but will instead spend the next few months rehabbing from surgery.
  • CIN Shortstop #97
Reds SS prospect Edwin Arroyo will undergo an MRI on his left shoulder.
Arroyo was lifted from Wednesday’s spring training contest after suffering a left shoulder injury during a pickoff play. There should be an update on the top prospect’s status in the coming days. The 20-year-old shortstop will open the season in the upper minors, most likely at Double-A Chattanooga.
  • CIN Shortstop #97
Reds prospect infielder Edwin Arroyo is not in Thursday’s Spring Breakout lineup.
Arroyo left Wednesday’s game after falling on his arm/shoulder on a slide back into first base. It sounds like the Reds are just playing it safe with the 20-year-old, who appears likely to begin the year in Double-A.
  • CIN Shortstop #97
Reds reassigned SS Edwin Arroyo, RHPs Rhett Lowder, Chase Petty, Julian Aguiar, Zach Maxwell, LHPs Reiver Sanmartin and Jacob Heatherly, Cs Mat Nelson, Michael Trautwein and Daniel Vellojín, INF Tyler Callihan and OF Blake Dunn to minor league camp.
No surprises here, but Arroyo, Lowder and Petty are the big-name prospects here. Lowder was Cincinnati’s first-round pick last summer and figures to move quickly after a standout collegiate career. Petty throws extremely hard and is just beginning to harness his formidable arsenal. He might be the first to arrive in the big leagues out of that trio.
  • CIN Shortstop #97
Edwin Arroyo, one of the prospects the Reds got from the Mariners in last year’s Luis Castillo trade, will join Double-A Chattanooga for the end of the minor league season.
Arroyo, who just turned 20 in late August, hit .248/.321/.427 with 28 steals for high-A Dayton. He’s one of the game’s better shortstop prospects, which just really doesn’t seem fair to the rest of the league.
