Juan Gutierrez threw six innings of two-hit ball as Double-A Corpus Christi beat Midland in its first playoff game.

Gutierrez, who missed more than a month with a sore arm before returning in mid-August, finished 8-4 with a 3.04 ERA, 94 H and 106/34 K/BB in 103 2/3 IP. The Venezuelan right-hander is one of the Astros’ best prospects, though his lack of a quality third pitch and the concerns about his arm might force him into a relief role.

Gutierrez underwent Tommy John surgery in September and likely won’t contribute until 2013. The 28-year-old right-hander holds a career 4.79 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, but also an 8.2 K/9 rate. He’ll be under team control through 2015.

Royals purchased the contract of RHP Juan Gutierrez from Triple-A Omaha.

The 29-year-old right-hander had an ugly 8.18 ERA in 11 innings this past season for Omaha. Gutierrez seems doubtful to crack the Royals’ 2013 Opening Day roster.

Diamondbacks released RHP Juan Gutierrez.

Gutierrez underwent Tommy John surgery last month, and evidently the D’Backs didn’t want to wait until 2013, when he will likely be ready to contribute again. The 28-year-old right-hander holds a career 4.79 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, but also an 8.2 K/9 rate. As a hard-thrower that won’t hit free agency until 2015, some other team will give him a shot.

Gutierrez has struck out 10 batters and issued only two walks in 12 innings this spring in the Cactus League. The right-hander should do fine in a middle relief role.

Juan Gutierrez gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning out of the pen Tuesday against the Dodgers.

The door was open for Gutierrez to replace Chad Qualls as Arizona’s closer, but he’s been a bust to date. This pushes his ERA up to 9.00 through 14 innings.
