Reds sent RHP James Marinan outright to High-A Dayton.

Marinan went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week and is now off the Reds’ 40-man roster. The 23-year-old righty has really struggled in the lower minors this season.

Reds designated RHP James Marinan for assignment.

Marinan has been removed from the Reds’ 40-man roster to make room for the club to claim outfielder Stuart Fairchild off waivers from the Giants. The 23-year-old righty has struggled this season to a 7.71 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 33/16 K/BB ratio across 32 2/3 innings (10 appearances, four starts) at High-A Dayton.

James Marinan allowed one run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout against the Rockies in a Cactus League start on Sunday.

Marinan gave up a single in a scoreless first inning before walking Elehuris Montero in the second. Ezequiel Tovar doubled to plate a run for Colorado before Marinan was able to get out of the inning. The 23-year-old right-hander projects as organizational depth for Cincinnati as he’s yet to pitch above High-A.

Reds purchased the contract of RHP James Marinan from High-A Dayton.

Marinan, 23, was acquired from the Dodgers in the Dylan Floro trade back in 2018. He hasn’t had much success in the minors, but the Reds didn’t want to risk losing him in the Rule 5 Draft.

Reds acquired RHP James Marinan and RHP Aneurys Zabala from the Dodgers for RHP Dylan Floro, RHP Zach Neal and international signing pool space.

Marinan was a fourth-round pick by the Dodgers in 2017, and the 6-foot-5, 220-pound pitcher is an interesting addition to the Cincinnati system. He throws three quality secondary pitches, and his fastball is plus with the ability to get up to 96 mph with good sink. He’s not an elite pitching prospect, but there’s enough here to project him as a starter at the next level.
