Triple-A Memphis’ John Nelson went 5-for-5 yesterday to raise his average to .333.

He has a .382 OBP and is slugging .529. Nelson remains a decent shortstop prospect, although the Cardinals didn’t like him enough to include him on their 40-man roster over the winter. He’s unlikely to be a long-term regular, but he could be a decent stopgap if the Cardinals ever need one.

Cardinals recalled infielder John Nelson from Triple-A Memphis.

Nelson is a better choice than Jose Vizcaino to get whatever starts that don’t go to Aaron Miles while shortstop David Eckstein is out, but that’s not saying much. The 27-year-old hit .215/.291/.411 in 423 at-bats for Memphis.

Nelson, the best shortstop prospect the Cardinals have in the minors, was batting .310/.405/.554 in 48 games for Double-A Tennessee. He doesn’t currently project as a major league regular.
