Unbelievable. Spencer, who was recalled Wednesday and is no higher than the Astros’ fourth choice to be playing center field at the moment, hit balls 429, 385, 387 and 351 feet in his four at-bats tonight. All were homers except for the 385-foot flyout. Spence entered with just one career extra-base hit while going 6-for-40 for the Astros. He totaled 13 homers in 99 games in the minors this season. He’s the third player in major league history to hit his first three homers in the same game, but as cool as that is, it’s not quite as awesome as Joshua Báez doing it in his first major league game last month. The other to pull it off was Seby Zavala in 2021.

Spence is in center field and hitting eight during one of the most important games of the season for Houston with both Daulton Varsho (wrist) and Brice Matthews (knee) unavailable due to injury. The 23-year-old has hit .162 (6-for-37) with three RBI across 14 games in the big leagues this season.

It’ll be Lucas Spence taking over in center field after Brice Matthews was hurt during Tuesday’s game in Seattle. Varsho remains out for the third consecutive contest due to an ongoing left wrist issue.

Spence returns to the minors after Houston picked up center fielder Daulton Varsho in a trade with the Blue Jays. The 23-year-old rookie hit .162 (6-for-37) during his first exposure to the big leagues after being called up last month.

It’s the first trip to the big leagues for the 23-year-old outfielder, who replaces the injured Brice Matthews (knee) on the Astros’ roster. Spence was hitting .258/.353/.424 with six homers, 44 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 278 plate appearances, mostly at Double-A Corpus Christi. He’s unlikely to see enough action to gain relevance from a fantasy perspective.

Nothing to see here as neither player was ever going to be a serious candidate to make the Astros’ Opening Day roster. Spence, 23, slashed .244/.368/.403 with 10 homers, 55 RBI and 27 stolen bases in 509 plate appearances across three minor league levels in 2025, finishing up at Double-A Corpus Christi.
