Oviedo was claimed off waivers from the Pirates last April and spent all of last year in the minors. The 23-year-old righty will open the upcoming regular season as extra relief depth at Triple-A Columbus.

Oviedo went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment by the Guardians last week and will remain with the organization as extra relief depth. The 22-year-old righty should get an opportunity at some point later this season in Cleveland.

The 22-year-old hurler holds a 2.03 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 14/10 K/BB ratio across 13 1/3 innings across two minor league levels this season. The Guardians took a chance on him on waivers back at the end of April, and there’s a chance that another club may be willing to now.

Oviedo was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh last week. The 22-year-old right-hander, who began his professional career in Cleveland’s system, posted a rough 8.80 ERA, 1.99 WHIP, and 31/26 K/BB ratio over his first 29 2/3 major league innings in 2021.

Oviedo is removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Chase De Jong. The right-hander could be claimed on waivers or traded, but has just of good a chance of reporting right back to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Oviedo has completed his minor league rehab assignment from a sprained right ankle and will remain at Double-A Altoona this season. The 22-year-old righty made 22 appearances (one start) last year in the majors with the Pirates.

Oviedo will face some higher level minor league competition before potentially returning to the Pirates’ bullpen later this month or in early May.

Oviedo, who also dealt with a shoulder strain last September, opened the regular season on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right ankle and it doesn’t sound like he’s too far away from rejoining the Pirates’ bullpen.

Oviedo hasn’t made an appearance this spring as he continues to recover from last year’s season-ending right shoulder strain. Apparently he’s also dealing with a sprained right ankle. So, there’s that too.

In turn, he’ll miss the remainder of the season. However, the move also clinches that the Rule 5 pick, originally selected from the Indians last December, will remain with the organization. Oviedo, 22, struggled with an 8.80 ERA and 31/26 K/BB ratio over 29 2/3 innings this season.
