Twins re-signed RHP Matt Canterino to a minor league contract.
It’s a two-year minor league pact for Canterino, who was cut loose last week by the Twins following his removal from the club’s 40-man roster. The 27-year-old pitching prospect’s once-promising career has been derailed by injuries and he basically hasn’t pitched in the minors since the 2022 season. He’s currently recovering after recently undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery.

    Twins released RHP Matt Canterino.
Canterino went unclaimed on waivers after being jettisoned from Minnesota’s 40-man roster last Friday. The 27-year-old right-hander was one of the more promising pitching prospects in the Twins’ system just a few years ago before injuries derailed his development. He was shut down back in spring training with a shoulder strain and basically hasn’t pitched at all in the minors since 2022. There’s probably a team out there willing to roll the dice, but he’s nothing more than a high-risk reclamation project now.

Twins designated RHP Matt Canterino for assignment.
With Luke Keaschall getting promoted to the 40-man roster on Friday someone needed to get the boot and it looks like Canterino drew the short straw this time around. The 27-year-old hurler underwent season-ending shoulder surgery last month and hasn’t thrown a pitch in affiliated ball since the 2022 season. It’s likely that he passed through waivers unclaimed and continues to rehab in the Twins’ organization.
  • MIN Center Fielder #32
Twins optioned OF Emmanuel Rodriguez and RHPs Matt Canterino, Marco Raya and Travis Adams to Triple-A St. Paul; reassigned RHPs Randy Dobnak, RHP Erasmo Ramirez, RHP Cory Lewis, C Alex Isola and INF Yunior Severino to minor league camp.
The headliner here is Rodriguez, though the Twins’ top prospect was never really a candidate to break camp with the big league club — especially after missing time with an ankle injury during spring camp. Dobnak could have potentially pushed to make the Opening Day roster in a long reliever role, but he’ll begin the season as extra depth at the Triple-A level instead. Ramirez could have been an option for the bullpen, but suffered a “significant tear” in his shoulder earlier in the week.

Matt Canterino has been shut down from throwing with a right shoulder strain.
Canterino has been plagued by injuries the last two years and hasn’t pitched in the minors since 2022. The 27-year-old righty is an interesting pitching prospect, but it’s unclear whether he’ll make it to the majors given how much development time he’s missed. There is no timetable for his return at the moment.

Twins RHP prospect Matt Canterino has been shut down from throwing due to right shoulder soreness.
Canterino hasn’t pitched in the minors since the 2022 campaign at this point after undergoing Tommy John surgery and a series of shoulder issues. It’s another tough break for the 26-year-old righty who was a second-round pick all the way back in 2019.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher
The Twins optioned LHP Brent Headrick, RHPs Simeon Woods Richardson and Matt Canterino to Triple-A St. Paul; reassigned RHP David Festa to minor league camp.
This was the second round of cuts made by the Twins. Headrick put together a respectable camp pitching 6 1/3 innings and a 2.84 ERA over three spring games. He had some major league experience last season in the bullpen when appeared in 14 games for Minnesota and posted a 6.31 ERA with a 30/10 K/BB ratio. to He’ll continue to develop in the minors where he had a 5.04 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP across 12 starts with Triple-A St. Paul last season.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #64
Twins activated INFs Jose Miranda and Nick Gordon, LHP Jovani Moran and RHP Matt Canterino from the 60-day injured list.
After a breakout rookie season in 2022, Miranda was plagued by injuries and ineffectiveness during a brutal 2023 season. He wound up hitting a mere .211/.263/.303 with only three homers and 13 RBI in 152 plate appearances at the big league level. He underwent shoulder surgery in mid-September but is expected to be ready to roll for the start of spring training.

Twins optioned RHP Matt Canterino to Double-A Wichita.
Canterino is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and will open the regular season in the minors. He was added to the Twins’ 40-man roster last November.

Twins selected the contract of RHP Matt Canterino from Double-A Wichita.
The 24-year-old right-hander had an unbelievable season at Double-A Wichita in 2022 -- registering a 1.95 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 54/23 K/BB ratio over 37 innings in 13 appearances (12 starts). He has been limited over the past few years due to the pandemic and forearm issues, so his innings will be limited in 2023 -- but that doesn’t mean he can’t make an impact at the big league level.
