Diamondbacks acquired RHP Matt Stites from the Padres in the Ian Kennedy deal.
Stites, 23, has compiled a 2.08 ERA, 14 saves and a 51/8 K/BB ratio over 52 innings this season in Double-A. Known for his plus-fastball and slider, he could become an impact reliever for Arizona in short order.

Matt Stites (elbow) threw a 20-pitch simulated game on Monday.
It’s the first time he’s faced hitters since going down with a strained right flexor tendon in spring training. “I was nervous for that just because this is kind of where it happened when I got to this place last time and got shut down,” Stites said. “But it was good, I’m excited and I’m encouraged.” Stites will pitch in the first of three extended spring training games Friday and will then progress to a rehab assignment.

Diamondbacks optioned RHP Matt Stites to Triple-A Reno.
Stites’ stint with Arizona was short and sweet. He allowed one hit over two scoreless outings, throwing a combined 18 pitches in 1 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander missed the first two months of the season with a strained right flexor tendon. He’ll be back with Arizona as soon as a roster spot opens up.

Matt Stites (elbow) played catch on Monday and is expected to do so again Wednesday.
Stites missed all of spring training with elbow issues. He’s had multiple MRIs and they’ve all revealed only inflammation, so the Diamondbacks are having a tough time getting a handle on the injury. There’s no timetable for his return.

Matt Stites underwent an MRI on his right elbow Thursday.
Stites has dealt with elbow issues off and on since the beginning of camp and it locked up on him during a batting practice session last weekend. The results of the exam won’t be available until Thursday, but it’s possible he could require an extended absence.
