Mets optioned IF Ronny Mauricio and RHP Joey Gerber to Triple-A Syracuse; reassigned RHP Mike Baumann and LHP Brandon Waddell to minor league camp.
Mauricio had hit .313/.389/.531 in Spring Training, but it wasn’t quite enough to hold on to him in a utility role. He’ll start at Syracuse and look to get back to the bigs in the near-term future. Mauricio hit .323/.384/.508 in 73 minor league plate appearances last year, including .515/.564/.818 in Syracuse for 39 plate appearances.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher #55
Mets signed RHP Mike Baumann to a minor league contact.
He’ll likely get a camp invite, but that will be announced later. Baumann had a 4.95 ERA in four starts and 130 relief appearances, most of them with the Orioles, from 2021-24. He went to Japan last season, but he pitched just 15 innings for the Swallows and finished with a 4.20 ERA. The Mets will most likely stash him as relief depth in Triple-A.
  • INT Relief Pitcher #55
Mike Baumann has signed with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
Well, that was fast. It turns out Baumann did have something lined up overseas. The 29-year-old reliever will take his talents to Japan in an effort to rebuild his long-term value after making 57 relief appearances last year between the Orioles, Mariners, Giants, Angels and Marlins, finishing with a pedestrian 5.55 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 58/28 K/BB ratio across 58 1/3 innings.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #55
    Marlins released RHP Mike Baumann.
It’s possible Baumann has a deal lined up overseas in either Korea or Japan. It seems far more likely that the Marlins needed to clear a 40-man roster spot in advance of this week’s Rule 5 Draft. The well-traveled 29-year-old righty made 57 relief appearances last year between the Orioles, Mariners, Giants, Angels and Marlins, finishing with a pedestrian 5.55 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 58/28 K/BB ratio across 58 1/3 innings.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher #55
Marlins activated RHP Mike Baumann from the paternity list.
Baumann has a 7.30 ERA in 10 relief appearances since the Marlins picked him up on waivers from the Angels. He’ll likely be dropped from the 40-man once the season is over.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher #53
Marlins claimed RHP Michael Baumann off waivers from the Angels.
The saga continues. Baumann was traded from Baltimore to Seattle, who traded him to the Giants, who designated him for assignment before being claimed by the Angels, who designated him for assignment Friday. The 28-year-old will be a good Immaculate Grid option. It remains to be seen if he’s a good pitcher.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #53
Angels designated RHP Mike Baumann for assignment.
The 28-year-old hurler was acquired from the Giants at the trade deadline, but struggled to a 6.75 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and a 7/4 K/BB ratio across 9 1/3 innings in his 10 appearances with the Halos. Ryan Zeferjahn was promoted from Triple-A Salt Lake to take his place in the Angels’ bullpen.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #54
Angels acquired RHP Mike Baumann from the Giants for cash considerations.
Baumann was designated for assignment Saturday by the Giants. It’s the third time he’s been traded, and the Angels will represent his fourth organization. Baumann has quality swing-and-miss stuff, but will continue his roster carousel if he doesn’t improve his command significantly.
  • SF Relief Pitcher #54
Giants designated RHP Mike Baumann for assignment.
Baumann’s lone relief appearance didn’t go well for San Francisco after he was scooped up last weekend from the Mariners so he’s been shipped out. The 28-year-old righty figures to generate some interest on waivers in the coming days.
  • SF Relief Pitcher #53
Giants acquired RHP Mike Baumann from the Mariners for cash considerations.
The 28-year-old hurler had been designated for assignment by the Mariners on Friday. Baumann had posted a 4.41 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 32/17 K/BB ratio in 34 2/3 frames between the Orioles and Mariners this season. He’ll now add bullpen depth for the Giants.
