Angels rained out at home for the first time since 1995

Last night’s Red Sox-Angels game was postponed by rain, making it the first Angels home game to be rained out since June 16, 1995. Twenty years!

Between those postponements the Angels played 1,609 home games in a row without being rained out.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia seemed to blame the ballpark’s drainage system, telling Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston:

Unfortunately, you never really know how your drainage system works until you get enough water, and there’s so much standing water in that outfield that just has nowhere to go. ... The rain is predicted to stop shortly, but the field was unplayable, with no way to remedy that. Was there a clog? I’m not a landscaper, but I don’t think it’s ever been tested like this. It’s a lot of rain. Don’t think anything is clogged. It’s just saturated.

So, basically, it’s tough to test how effective a drainage system can be when it doesn’t rain enough for there to a rainout in 20 years. Oh well.
