As I mentioned in the recaps this morning, Los Angeles Angels reliever Jake Jewell had to be taken off the field on a stretcher after a play at home plate in the bottom of the eighth inning in last night’s game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

With a runner on third, Jewell threw wild pitch and ran home to cover. He slipped, however, and his right ankle got caught beneath him. He was on the ground in obvious pain and then was taken out on a stretcher and directly to Massachusetts General hospital. There has been no update yet, but you have to suspect it was a compound fracture or something equally terrible.

An awful thing to happen to anyone, but especially to Jewell, who had just been recalled from Triple-A before the game and was making only his third big league appearance.
