Are the Marlins ditching 23-year-old Jacob Turner for 36-year-old Brad Penny?

Not only did the Marlins surprise a lot of people by designating for assignment one-time top prospect Jacob Turner--who at 23 years old still has plenty of upside--they’re apparently thinking of replacing him in the rotation with 36-year-old Brad Penny.

Seriously. John Perrotto of the Miami Herald reports that calling up Penny from Triple-A “is a strong possibility” in part because he has an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract.

Penny has a 2.28 ERA five starts at Triple-A, but he’s also allowed 35 baserunners in 28 innings and, more importantly, hasn’t posted an ERA under 5.00 in the big leagues since 2010.
