From beat writer Shi Davidi of Sportsnet comes word that the Blue Jays have acquired middle infielder Darwin Barney from the Dodgers for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Barney will join up with the American League East-leading Blue Jays on Sunday after spending most of the 2015 season at Triple-A Oklahoma City. Nice little upgrade for him.

Barney is a .245/.293/.336 career hitter in over 2,000 major league plate appearances, but the 29-year-old plays very good defense at second base and shortstop. He’ll provide depth while star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki recovers from a cracked shoulder blade.

Barney is not eligible for the postseason because this trade came after August 31.

Toronto is hoping to get Tulo back right around the beginning of October anyway.
