Rays pitching prospect Brent Honeywell underwent a decompression procedure on his right ulnar nerve, MLB.com’s Juan Toribio reports. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Honeywell, 25, hasn’t pitched since 2017. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018. In June last year, he fractured his right elbow, which ended his 2019 season. It’s been a tough few years for the right-hander.
Honeywell has been a consensus top-100 prospect dating back to 2016. In his last full season, 2017, he threw 123 2/3 innings at Triple-A Durham, posting a 3.64 ERA with 152 strikeouts and 31 walks. Health aside, Honeywell has been considered major league-ready, but he likely won’t get to do that until 2021.
