Brewers “have a standing offer” to Alex Gonzalez

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the Brewers “have a standing offer” to 35-year-old shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in May.

They want Gonzalez to re-sign as a backup to new shortstop Jean Segura, but assistant general manager Gord Ash told Haudricourt that Gonzalez “is not going to take anything that would indicate he’d be a backup until he exhausts the opportunities to play every day.”

In other words, he’ll keep shopping around for a starting job--or at least a better opportunity to play himself into a starting job--and then perhaps re-sign with the Brewers to back up Segura if there’s nothing to be found.
