Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy was given a cortisone injection on Tuesday afternoon in Manhattan to help curb some of the discomfort related to his strained right intercostal muscle.
Murphy suffered the injury on Monday morning while performing a drill at Mets camp in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He is expected to return to the practice field in Port St. Lucie after a week to 10 days of rest.
Murphy batted .291/.332/.403 with six home runs and 65 RBI in 156 games last summer and earned a one-year, $2.75 million contract this winter as a first-year arbitration-eligible player.
The 27-year-old has ample time to get ready for the start of the 2013 regular season.
