Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart took a lot of heat when he traded highly-regarded 2014 first round pick Touki Toussaint to the Atlanta Braves, basically for cash. At the time he tried to brush off the criticism by saying ". . . guys are mentioning that he throws 96 mph. He hasn’t thrown 96 mph since he’s been here. We haven’t seen 96 once.”
Against that backdrop, Ken Rosenthal dropped this in his notes column last night:
Technically speaking 98 is not 96, so Stewart could still be right!
Andrew Joseph of Azcentral.com has more background on Toussaint’s couple of appearances in the Braves system, as well as some good backfill from Nick Piecoro from the time of the trade in which Piecoro reported that many others around baseball disagreed with Stewart’s assessment of his own prospect.
There are guys who check stuff these days, Dave. So better to be vague.
