Death. Taxes. The Indians signing Michael Martinez to a minor league deal. They did it again over the weekend, giving the 35-year-old utilityman an invitation to spring training.

The Indians first signed him in 2015, sent him to the Red Sox in 2016 and then brought him back a month later on waivers. They traded him to the Rays earlier this year and then brought him back again after he was waived in late June. They just can’t quit one another, I suppose.

Overall Martinez has logged big league time with the Indians, Phillies, Rays, Pirates and Red Sox, putting up a line of .194/.243/.261 in 621 plate appearances. He’s been better in Cleveland, batting .257/.289/.331 in 145 plate appearances with the Tribe, so I suppose that’s why they’ve brought him back so many times. That and the fact that he has played every position except first base and catcher. Dude even pitched an inning this past season.
