Javier Vazquez continues dramatic turnaround, hurls first shutout since 2005

The resurgence of Javier Vazquez marches on.

Vazquez allowed five hits and struck out seven in a complete game shutout against the Nationals last night. It was his first complete game since September 25, 2009 as a member of the Braves and his first shutout since May 22, 2005 with the Diamondbacks. After last night’s shutout, Vazquez now has a 3.92 ERA on the season.

Vazquez had a 7.09 ERA after giving up seven runs over 3 2/3 innings on June 11. It was easy to say that he looked done at the time, but thanks to a sudden uptick in velocity, the 35-year-old right-hander has an incredible 2.03 ERA and 100/18 K/BB ratio in 110 2/3 innings over his last 17 starts. Clayton Kershaw, Cliff Lee, Tim Lincecum and Justin Verlander are the only pitchers with a lower ERA during the same timespan.

Vazquez is still leaning toward retirement following the season, but he would likely find a multi-year contract this winter if he wants to continue his career.
