Veteran Justin Morneau would like to continue playing baseball next season, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports. But Morneau noted that, as he has dealt with neck issues as of late, “the choice might not be up to me.”
Morneau said, “At this point, I would lean toward I still enjoy the work and still would like to (play), but it also has to make sense at this point with my family and spending time away and all that stuff.”
Morneau, 35, is a free agent after the season. He hit .256/.295/.430 with five home run and 22 RBI in 183 plate appearances for the White Sox this year, making his season debut on July 15. The club has used him exclusively at DH and nearly exclusively against right-handed pitching.
Given Morneau’s age, injury history, and declining production, his best fit for next season will almost certainly be with an AL team looking to utilize a platoon at DH.
