The Seattle Mariners have signed Jayson Werth to a minor league deal. The plan is for Werth to go to Peoria for extended spring training, after which he’ll report to Triple-A Tacoma.
Werth, who will be 39 in May, completed a seven-year, $126 million deal with the Nationals in 2017. While he had his high points with the Nats, age and injury caused his performance to decline over time. Last season he played in only 70 games hitting .226/.322/.393 with 10 home runs and 29 RBI in 289 plate appearances.
If he rakes in Tacoma and/or if an injury occurs to one the M’s outfielders, he may very well be back in the bigs. It’s not completely in his hands, of course.
