Matt Garza suffers oblique strain during dominant start against the Cardinals

Matt Garza curiously left Sunday afternoon’s ballgame after shutting the Cardinals out on one hit over six innings. He had accrued only 71 pitches, so the early exit prompted speculation that the right-hander suffered an injury.

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Garza strained his left oblique. He will be examined further to determine the severity. Oblique injuries are, as Haudricourt describes them, “tricky”, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Garza needed to skip his next start. In the event Garza needs a stint on the disabled list, Marco Estrada would likely return to the rotation.

Including today’s sterling outing against the Cardinals, in which the Brewers lost 3-2, Garza has a 3.58 ERA and he now owns a 104/43 K/BB ratio in 145 2/3 innings.
