Here’s a blast from the past.
The Mets announced this afternoon that they have signed left-hander C.J. Nitkowski to a minor league contract, pending a physical. He’s expected to report to Double-A Binghamton.
Nitkowski, who had a tryout with the Mets back in March, broke the news via his Twitter account:
Nitkowski, now 39, hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2005 as a member of the Nationals. He was with the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate in 2006 before pitching in Japan from 2007-2008 and Korea from 2009-2010. The southpaw hasn’t appeared in organized ball since then, but he underwent the same stem cell treatment as Bartolo Colon last year and has reverted to a sidearm delivery in an effort to revive his career. This should be a pretty interesting story to follow.
