Trailing the Marlins 2-0 on Thursday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader, Mets starter Steven Matz helped his own cause by swatting a two-run home run to left field off of Sandy Alcantara in the bottom of the second inning. It’s the first homer of Matz’s career.

Matz is the first Mets pitcher to homer this season. Last season, Jacob deGrom and Seth Lugo each hit dingers.

Matz, 27, yielded two runs in the top half of the second on a pair of solo home runs to Peter O’Brien and Isaac Galloway. The lefty entered Wednesday’s start with a 4.17 ERA and a 132/47 K/BB ratio in 133 2/3 innings.
