Angels outfielder Mike Trout was named the 2016 American League Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He’s the first Angel to win the award since... himself, two years ago. Trout now has four consecutive top-two AL MVP finishes in the last five years.
Trout, 25, had another outstanding year, leading the majors with 123 runs scored, 116 walks, a .441 on-base percentage, and a 174 adjusted OPS (OPS+). He also hit .315 with a .550 slugging percentage, 29 home runs, 100 RBI, and 30 stolen bases in 681 plate appearances. His 10.6 WAR, via Baseball Reference, was also by far the best mark in baseball.
Trout received 19 of 30 first-place votes. Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts finished in second place followed by Astros second baseman Jose Altuve. Blue Jays Josh Donaldson wasn’t far behind followed by Orioles third baseman Manny Machado and Red Sox DH David Ortiz.
