In what might have been the most-watched outing of his career, Matt Harvey tied a career high for runs allowed.
Washington struck for two runs in the bottom of the first, one in the bottom of the second, and four in the bottom of the sixth on a Little League grand slam from Michael Taylor as Harvey and the Mets went down early in a big matchup Tuesday night at Nationals Park.
Harvey didn’t allow an extra-base hit and he only threw 74 pitches, but there were several hard-hit balls off Washington bats throughout the evening. Taylor’s four-run single in the sixth inning went right through Yoenis Cespedes in center field and got all the way to the wall.
Harvey, the subject of endless innings-limit controversy over the last several days, figures to make one more start before entering a shutdown period. He could then be brought back for the Mets’ final regular-season series versus these same Nationals, who remain very much alive tonight in the NL East race.
The 26-year-old right-hander has stated publicly that he will pitch in the 2015 playoffs.
