Making official what was reported last week, the Padres have hired Mark McGwire as their new bench coach.

He’ll serve as the right-hand man for rookie manager Andy Green after previously working as the Dodgers’ hitting coach for the past three seasons.

Green beat out longtime Twins manager Ron Gardenhire for the Padres job and the team later tried to hire Gardenhire as Green’s bench coach, but he declined and they eventually turned to McGwire.

San Diego is coming off a 74-88 season and the Padres haven’t made the playoffs since 2006.
