Padres will likely attempt to trade Andrew Cashner after free agent market settles

Per Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Padres will likely attempt to trade starter Andrew Cashner once the free agent market “shakes out”. He also notes that, according to rival executives, the Padres would likely need to be overwhelmed to deal young starter Tyson Ross.

Cashner, 29, made it through the 2015 season unscathed after suffering through an injury-plagued 2014. He posted a 4.34 ERA with a 165/66 K/BB ratio over 184 2/3 innings.

Cashner is entering his third and final year of arbitration eligibility after earning $4.05 million this past season. He’ll be eligible for free agency after the 2016 season.

The Padres are expected to consider trading James Shields, Derek Norris, and Matt Kemp as well, essentially undoing all of the remodeling executive vice president and GM A.J. Preller did last offseason.
