Red Sox hire Greg Colbrunn as new hitting coach

Greg Colbrunn, who played 13 seasons in the majors for seven different teams, has been hired as the Red Sox’s new hitting coach.

Colbrunn retired after the 2004 season and the right-handed hitting first baseman never played for the Red Sox, but has spent the past three years coaching in the Yankees’ minor-league system.

He beat out Red Sox minor league hitting coordinator Victor Rodriguez, former Diamondbacks hitting coach Rick Schu, and Braves assistant hitting coach Scott Fletcher for the job and replaces Dave Magadan, who left Boston to take the same gig in Texas.
