Riggleman resigned unexpectedly on June 23, 2011 because the club refused to discuss a contract extension, the Major League Baseball team said. Riggleman told the team before Thursday’s 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners that he would quit immediately after the contest unless his contract was extended for another season, according to the Nationals. Jim Riggleman, who quit managing the Nationals in the middle of the 2011 season due to acrimonious contract negotiations and spent this year managing the Reds’ Double-A team, has been promoted to Triple-A.

Riggleman will manage Louisville of the International League, which is Cincinnati’s affiliate. He had a 68-70 record at Double-A while managing, among others, fastest man in baseball and top prospect Billy Hamilton.

When he stepped down as Nationals manager they had a 38-37 (.503) record. Since then they’ve gone 138-107 (.563) under Davey Johnson.
