Report: Mets asked the Athletics about Danny Valencia

Ken Davidoff of the New York Post reported on Friday that, before the club picked up Kelly Johnson from the Braves, the Mets inquired with the Athletics about third baseman Danny Valencia. The Mets, of course, are likely going to be without star third baseman David Wright for the rest of the season due to a herniated disk in his neck.

Johnson, who entered Sunday’s action with a .627 OPS, is an adequate short-term fix, but the Mets -- held to three or fewer runs in five of their last seven games -- could use a more substantial replacement at third base.

Valencia went 0-for-3 on Sunday, but still owns an outstanding .326/.369/.541 triple-slash line with 10 home runs and 27 RBI on the season.
