The Nationals sign Nate Schierholtz to a minor league deal

Nate Schierholtz

Jon Morosi reports that the Washington Nationals have signed outfielder Nate Schierholtz to a minor league deal.

Schierholtz was DFA’d by the Cubs on August 6 after he posted a .192 average with six homers and a .541 OPS in 99 games. He had a career-high 21 homers last season, but that’s clearly the high-water mark. He’s better off as a bench bat/platoon guy or someone you stash at Triple-A for depth in case of an injury to a starter.

Which is, in all likelihood, why the Nats signed him.
