The Phillies sign reliever Dennys Reyes

Lost in all of the big Melky Cabrera (and Carl Crawford) news last night was word that the Phillies signed lefty Dennys Reyes to a one-year deal. It’s for $1.1 million with a $1.35 million option for 2012. More important: this deal fills the Phillies’ roster spot dedicated to relief pitchers with a troublesome and awkward “y” in their name.
For a lefty, Reyes struggled against left-handers in 2010, which makes him more of a standard middle relief guy than a lefty specialist. Charlie Manuel has done a pretty good job managing a bullpen that, at times, has been less-than-ideal, however, so I’m guessing he’ll deploy Reyes where he’s most likely to succeed.
