Over the weekend, the Rangers inked outfielder Carlos Gomez to a minor league contract. Gomez was designated for assignment by the Astros earlier this month and released him on Friday. He reported to Triple-A Round Rock where he’ll get back to game speed before joining the big league squad.

The Rangers lost Shin-Soo Choo for the rest of the year with a broken forearm, so the club decided to take a shot on Gomez to fill the gap. Manager Jeff Banister plans for Gomez to be the club’s regular left fielder, Jeff Wilson of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Gomez, 30, hit .210/.272/.322 with five home runs and 29 RBI in 323 plate appearances with the Astros. He’s a two-time All-Star and still young enough where it’s reasonable to expect a resurgence.
