Yovani Gallardo won’t pitch in the All-Star game due to injury

Brewers manager Ken Macha announced today that Yovani Gallardo will not be available to pitch in the All-Star game after leaving Sunday’s start with a strained oblique. According to Macha the “best-case scenario” for Gallardo is “doing no baseball activities for at least 10 days” and “you can’t have a guy walk off the mound one week and then put him in [All-Star] game the next.” Gallardo is very deserving of his first All-Star selection, going 8-4 with a 2.58 ERA, .224 opponents’ batting average, and 122/48 K/BB ratio in 112 innings. Presumably he’ll be replaced on the NL roster by another starting pitcher, with Mike Pelfrey, Mat Latos, and Jaime Garcia being among the obvious choices.
