Campbell was pushed off the 40-man roster in Miami and ultimately passed through waivers unclaimed. The 27-year-old righty underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery this past August and probably won’t be ready for live action again until the beginning of the 2024 campaign.

Campbell has been out since late April due to a right elbow strain and wound up requiring the season-ending procedure. Given the timing of the surgery, his recovery timeline will likely extend into the 2024 campaign.

It’s procedural move to clear room on the 40-man roster for Luke Williams. The right-hander will be out indefinitely while he recovers from a right elbow strain, and can’t come off the injured list now until the end of June.

Campbell was just called up this past Sunday and had yet to make an appearance for the Fish. Daniel Castano has been promoted from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding roster move.

Campbell will add some extra relief depth for Miami moving forward. The 26-year-old allowed ten runs over eight innings in the minors this season.

Pop and Campbell had a shot to stick on the Marlins’ expanded 28-man Opening Day roster as extra pitching depth, but they’ll head to Triple-A Jacksonville instead. Pop held his own in the majors last year, posting a serviceable 4.12 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 51/24 K/BB ratio across 54 2/3 innings (50 appearances).

With the expectation that teams will be allowed to carry 28 on their roster for the first month of the season, Major League Baseball is allowing the Marlins to bring the three pitchers back to major league camp. They’ll be back Saturday.

Campbell will start the 2022 regular season in the upper minors. The 26-year-old righty posted a lackluster 6.41 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 26/10 K/BB ratio across 26 2/3 innings (16 appearances, one start) last year as a rookie with the Marlins.

The Marlins placed Campbell on the injured list on August 31 without a designation. To clear a spot on the roster, Miami designated Austin Pruitt for assignment. Campbell will be a middle-relief option while with the Fish.

The Marlins didn’t specify the injury, which often signifies a COVID-19 situation. Zach Pop will replace him on the active roster.
