He also gets a spring training invite. Swindle was released by the Rays in July after posting a 4.15 ERA and 36/17 K/BB ratio over 34 2/3 innings with Triple-A Durham. The 28-year-old southpaw hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since 2009, as a member of the Brewers, and is likely a longshot to make the Opening Day roster.

Swindle spent about 10 days with the big club in April and posted a 6.75 ERA in 1 1/3 innings. The side-armer should get a better shake this time around. He’ll pitch in middle relief.

If he can manage anywhere close to the .148 BAA against lefthanders he had at Nashville, Swindle will be up to stay.

Swindle, a lefty side-armer, was signed from Philadelphia as a minor league free agent in November. In three appearances for Nashville, Swindle pitched six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and only two walks.

The Brewers needed to free up a roster spot for Frank Catalanotto, who will provide depth in the infield and outfield. Swindle has been up and down all season. He has a 13.50 ERA in 2 2/3 major league innings this year.

It has been a whirlwind week for Swindle, who was claimed by the Rays from the Brewers on Friday, then designated for assignment one day later. He’ll work in relief at Triple-A for now.

Swindle had allowed a run in each of his six outings, making him the Cal Ripken of terrible relief pitching.

Swindle was cut by the Brewers after giving up 12 runs in 6 2/3 innings. Since he has minor league options left, the Rays are expected to send him to Triple-A Durham.

Swindle was claimed just one day ago by the Rays, but will get the boot to make room for Russ Springer. He gave up 12 runs in 6 2/3 innings with the Brewers before these transactions, so there’s a chance he could clear waivers and wind up back at Triple-A Durham.
