The Society of American Baseball Research has determined that Reggie Sanders is the first player in history to have a 20-homer season for six different clubs.
He’s turned the trick for the Reds, Padres, Diamondbacks, Giants, Pirates, and Cardinals. Reggie is also the only player to tally 100 whiffs for six different clubs. Jack Clark, Bobby Bonds, Fred McGriff, Dave Winfield, Jose Canseco and Gary Sheffield have all hit 20 dingers for five separate teams.
  • With Brian Giles out, Reggie Sanders will cover left field while the Pirates play in PNC Park. The group of hitters filling in for Giles will take right field.
At PNC, there is more area to cover in left and left-center field. ''We’ll put the speed out there and let the other guys man right field,’' manager Lloyd McClendon said. This switch has no bearing on fantasy value.
  • Reggie Sanders’ sore hamstring kept him out of a fifth straight game yesterday.
Reggie may not be able to play until at least Tuesday, but there hasn’t been any discussion about a possible DL stint.
  • The Devil Rays are believed to have interest in free agent Reggie Sanders.
If Sanders and Tino Martinez join the Rays, Aubrey Huff likely would become the regular DH. Sanders is believed to want a two-year deal. Because the Pirates should be able to offer him arbitration, the Rays would lose a second-round pick if they signed him.
  • According to the New York Post, the Mets have contacted free agents Reggie Sanders, Todd Hollandsworth and Mike DeJean to let them know they have some interest.
The Mets probably aren’t in heavy pursuit of any of the three. Sanders would be a nice short-term solution in right field, but the Mets aren’t going to offer much money to someone who is only going to be of help for one or two years.
  • Reggie Sanders is not with the Cardinals, having returned to Phoenix where his wife gave birth.
In case you wondered why Sanders wasn’t in the box scores.
  • The Cardinals are expected to sign Reggie Sanders to a two-year, $6 million contract today.
A pretty good move by the Cardinals. Although he’s now 36, Sanders is coming off one of the best years of his career. He will be a fine replacement for J.D. Drew in right field.
  • Reggie Sanders won’t return to Pittsburgh. The Pirates haven’t contacted him in two weeks.
“I don’t anticipate Reggie coming back to Pittsburgh, I don’t really see any way of that happening,” agent Mike Powers said. The Pirates are trying to sign Matt Stairs and Julian Tavarez before the arbitration deadline, but those might be the only two free agents retained. The Royals, Mets and Devil Rays are among the teams interested in Sanders.
  • The Mets met with Reggie Sanders yesterday, taking him to the Knicks-Pistons game at MSG.
Sanders is either first or second on the Mets list of right field solutions. Jose Guillen, who could receive an offer next week, is right there with him.
  • Reggie Sanders missed his fourth game with a strained rib-cage muscle.
He was available to pinch hit and he could start tonight.
