Angels’ general manager Perry Minasian told reporters on Saturday that there’s no timetable for the Angels to hire a new manager.
Minasian did note that he would prefer to do it as quickly as possible, but wouldn’t give any sort of timeline or self-imposed deadline on when he wanted it to be done by. With so many managerial vacancies around the league, those who act quick will have access to a much larger and more qualified pool of candidates. The Rangers already struck first by hiring Skip Schumaker on Friday.
  • Angels fired manager Ron Washington.
It’s now official that Washington’s tenure in Los Angeles is over following a team statement. The 73-year-old skipper took a leave of absence in late June to undergo a quadruple bypass procedure and never returned. He went 135-189 (.417) in his two seasons at the helm in his first managerial opportunity since leading the Rangers for eight years from 2007-2014.
  • The Angels have decided to move on from Ron Washington as manager and will not make interim Roy Montgomery his replacement, a source told The Athletic’s Sam Blum.
A clean slate is probably best here. It’s rough that Washington loses his job after heart surgery, but given how he performed in 2024, bringing him back for 2025 was a mistake prior to the health problems.
  • Ron Washington plans to return as Angels manager next season.
Washington took a leave of absence in late June due to health concerns with Ray Montgomery taking over as the Angels interim manager. The 73-year-old told reporters he underwent a quadruple bypass earlier this summer. The iconic skipper plans to continue managing and will return to the helm next season after making an effort to quit smoking and improve his diet. We’re relieved that he’s healthy and feeling better following the major procedure. His presence should help stabilize the Angels next season.
  • The Angels announced Friday that manager Ron Washington will miss the remainder of the season due to health concerns.
Ray Montgomery will continue to function as the team’s interim manager in Washington’s stead while Ryan Goins will serve as the team’s bench coach. We continue to wish the Angels’ skipper the best in whatever it is that he’s going through and hope to see him back on the diamond as soon as possible.
  • The Athletic’s Sam Blum reports Angels manager Ron Washington is taking an indefinite leave due to health concerns.
Washington remains in the building on Friday night, but will be watching from the suites. Bench coach Ray Montgomery is taking over as the team’s acting manager while Washington is away. We’re wishing the Angels’ skipper the best in whatever it is that he’s going through and we hope to see him back on the diamond as soon as possible.
  • The Angels announced on Tuesday that they have brought on Tim Laker to be their offensive coordinator for the 2024 season.
Laker had worked previously as the Mariners’ hitting coach and as the Dodgers’ minor league hitting coordinator. He’s expected to work alongside new hitting coach Johnny Washington as part of a deep and talented coaching group that skipper Ron Washington has assembled in Los Angeles.
  • LAA Pitching Coach
Angels hired Barry Enright as pitching coach.
Enright has worked for the Diamondbacks as a pitching coach for the last three years, most recently spending the last two years as Brent Strom’s assistant pitching coach on the big league staff. The 37-year-old former big leaguer logged parts of two seasons with the Angels from 2012-2013. He’s the newest addition to manager Ron Washington’s coaching staff out in Los Angeles heading into the 2024 campaign.
  • Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reports that Bo Porter will join the Angels’ coaching staff as their first base coach.
Porter — who also interviewed for the Angels’ managerial job this fall — previously managed the Astros from 2013-2014. He then served as the Braves’ third base coach from 2015-2016 when he was replaced by none other than Ron Washington. Porter then took a role in the Braves’ front office as a special assistant to the general manager. He’ll join what’s looking like a very deep and talented coaching staff under new Angels’ skipper Ron Washington.
  • Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY reports Angels manager Ron Washington is expected to hire former Pirates manager Clint Hurdle as his bench coach.
Nightengale adds that Washington’s staff in Los Angeles is also expected to include Chili Davis as hitting coach, Torii Hunter as first base coach, Eric Young Sr. as third base coach and a recently-retired Ryan Goins as infield coach. There could wind up being some changes in the near future, but it’s a pretty impressive list for the Angels.
