Talks have stalled between the Diamondbacks and first-round pick (No. 15 overall) Stephen Drew.
“We knew this was going to be a headache,” Mike Rizzo, Diamondbacks director of scouting said. “I knew it was going to be a lot of work. I could have taken the easy way out and signed a guy the day we drafted him.” If the D’Backs are having this much trouble with the No. 15 pick, just wait until they pick first overall in 2005.

Arizona GM Joe Garagiola Jr. said negotiations with first-round pick Stephen Drew are in the “quiet mode” and are likely to remain that way until spring baseball nears.
Regarding talks on an extension for Richie Sexson, Garagiola said, "[His agent] is calling again on Monday, and I take that as a positive. He didn’t say, ‘Don’t ever call me again,’ and then throw away my number.”

The Diamondbacks will soon make a new proposal to first-round pick Stephen Drew.
“We would like to have this (signing) done before spring training,” scouting director Mike Rizzo said. Drew is one of two unsigned first-round picks from the 2004 draft. He’ll want a major league deal, probably one that guarantees him at least $5 million.
