Regarding talks on an extension for Richie Sexson, Garagiola said, "[His agent] is calling again on Monday, and I take that as a positive. He didn’t say, ‘Don’t ever call me again,’ and then throw away my number.”

“We’re keeping the lines of communication open and it’s still very much our intent to try and sign Stephen Drew to a contract,” Rizzo said. “We just need to find out what he’s going to do.” Drew still hasn’t attended a class this week at Florida State.

Drew informed the team they would have his answer by Tuesday, when he is scheduled to begin classes.

Rizzo was still waiting to hear back from Boras on Monday afternoon.

“We would like to have this (signing) done before spring training,” scouting director Mike Rizzo said. Drew is one of two unsigned first-round picks from the 2004 draft. He’ll want a major league deal, probably one that guarantees him at least $5 million.
