Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that it “seems more likely” that Arizona’s trade options this offseason “involve outfielders Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas.”
Both players are arbitration-eligible, so this would be a move to free up salary cap space; however, Piecoro also notes that the Diamondbacks believe they have plenty of options to move into that vacated outfield role, including Jorge Barossa, Tim Tawa, Blaze Alexander, and even Jordan Lawlar, who has been playing center field this winter. Nothing is imminent, but this remains a story to watch because of what it could mean for Lawlar or Tawa’s playing time.

Tim Tawa went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored on Sunday as the Diamondbacks dispatched of the Phillies.
Tawa started a five-run rally in the second inning with a leadoff single then came around to score on a two-run knock by Ketel Marte. He then tagged Orion Kerkering for a 412-foot (109.2 mph EV) solo shot in the seventh inning that increased the Diamondbacks’ advantage to 8-0. With his two-hit afternoon, the 26-year-old is now hitting .213/.276/.372 with seven long balls and 17 RBI in 205 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks this season.

Diamondbacks recalled INF Tim Tawa from Triple-A Reno.
Tawa finds himself back in the majors for the first time since early July with Tyler Locklear heading to the injured list with elbow inflammation. The versatile 26-year-old batted .200 (31-for-155) with six homers and seven steals across 59 games in his first taste of the big leagues earlier this season.

Diamondbacks optioned INF Tim Tawa to Triple-A Reno.
Tawa has been shipped back to the minors to make room for franchise cornerstone Corbin Carroll to return from the injured list prior to Saturday’s game against the Royals. The versatile 26-year-old rookie hit .200 (31-for-155) with six homers and seven steals across 59 games in his first taste of the big leagues.

Josh Naylor is not in the starting lineup for Thursday’s game against the Giants.
It’s not known if this is a day off related to the neck injury that sidelined Naylor, a chance to get a break against a tough left-hander in Robbie Ray or both. The 28-year-old will sit with Tim Tawa getting the start at first base.

Diamondbacks placed OF Corbin Carroll on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 19, with a fractured left wrist.
It’s only a chip fracture, so perhaps Carroll will be able to return right after the break. The Diamondbacks, though, haven’t put out any timetable yet. They’ll likely give Carroll’s playing time to the newly recalled Jake McCarthy and Tim Tawa. Maybe Pavin Smith will see more time against lefties with Randal Grichuk starting in right field instead of the DH spot.

Josh Naylor left Monday’s game against the White Sox with a possible injury.
Naylor appeared to tweak something in his right arm on an awkward swing before striking out to end the second inning. He was replaced by rookie Tim Tawa at first base a couple frames later. He was 1-for-3 with a two-run double prior to leaving the contest. There should be an update on his status shortly.

Josh Naylor is absent from the lineup for Friday’s game against the Reds due to shoulder soreness.
The 27-year-old first baseman was pulled from Thursday’s game due to nagging shoulder and hand injuries. He’s still considered day-to-day. Tim Tawa will start in his place at first base and will bat eighth against Nick Lodolo and the Reds on Friday night in Cincinnati.
  • AZ Left Fielder #12
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not in the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale against the Dodgers.
It’s a rare night off for Gurriel with rookie Tim Tawa entering the lineup to play left field and face Dodgers righty Dustin May. It’ll be Gabriel Moreno, who has homered in back-to-back contests and is hitting .321 over his last 15 games, moving up to the third spot in Arizona’s lineup.
  • AZ 2nd Baseman #4
Ketel Marte is not in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Dogers.
Arizona continues to give Marte regular rest after returning earlier this month from the injured list without a rehab assignment. The 31-year-old fantasy star blasted two homers during Friday’s loss to the Dodgers and has gone deep three times in his last three contests. It’ll be rookie Tim Tawa getting into the lineup at second base on Sunday afternoon.
