TJ Friedl went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer on Tuesday to lift the Reds to an 8-1 blowout win over the Rockies in Cactus League action.
Friedl took Colorado reliever Jimmy Herget deep with two outs in the fourth inning for his first big fly of the spring. The 30-year-old centerfielder remains Cincinnati’s primary leadoff option ahead of middle-of-the-order forces Elly De La Cruz and Eugenio Suárez heading into the regular season, which makes him a decent OF5 option in shallow mixed leagues.

Reds agreed to terms with OF TJ Friedl on a one-year, $3.8 million contract.
Friedl and Spencer Steer are both eligible for arbitration for the first time, but Friedl is settling $200,000 less than Steer, even though he’s coming of the better season and is at 8.1 career fWAR, versus 4.5 for Steer. Freidl hit .261/.364/.378 in 685 plate appearances as the Reds’ starting center fielder and leadoff man last season. It looks like he’ll carry both roles into 2026; there was some talk of bringing in a center fielder and moving him to left, but it seems the team considers him the better center field option than newcomer JJ Bleday.
  • CIN Center Fielder #54
Reds acquired OF Dane Myers from the Reds for OF Ethan O’Donnell.
There was no avenue for Myers to play regularly next season in Miami with Kyle Stowers and Jakob Marsee emerging as core building blocks and Griffin Conine coming back from shoulder surgery. The 29-year-old, who posted a pedestrian .617 OPS with six homers and 19 steals over 333 plate appearances across 106 games for the Marlins last season, provides the Reds with a decent insurance policy behind center fielder TJ Friedl. He’ll enter spring training in competition with Will Benson and JJ Bleday for a corner-outfield role, with a bench assignment the most probable outcome.

  • CIN Center Fielder #33
Reds signed OF JJ Bleday to a one-year, $1.4 million contract.
The deal is now official. Bleday heads to Cincinnati as a relatively low-risk reclamation project after being non-tendered by the Athletics last month with top prospects Denzel Clarke and Colby Thomas taking over in center field with Tyler Soderstrom and Lawrence Butler in the corners. The 28-year-old former top-five pick figures to compete with Will Benson in spring training for playing time in a platoon role for the Reds next season. At a bare minimum, he’ll occupy a bench role as an insurance policy behind TJ Friedl in center field. His fantasy appeal is strictly limited to NL-only formats based on his pedestrian plate skills and lack of stolen base upside. He’s an extremely streaky hot-and-cold power hitter that will have stretches of fantasy relevance, especially in Cincinnati’s favorable offensive environment.
  • CIN 3rd Baseman #43
Sal Stewart is at first base and batting fifth in Wednesday’s pivotal Game 2 matchup against the Dodgers.
Stewart will get an opportunity in the heart of Cincinnati’s lineup to face Dodgers co-ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto after coming off the bench during the late stages of Tuesday’s series opener. The 21-year-old top prospect adds some serious thunder to the middle of the order in a win-or-go-home spot for the Reds after homering five times in 18 regular-season contests after being called up in early September. Here’s the full lineup: TJ Friedl (CF), Spencer Steer (LF), Gavin Lux (DH), Austin Hays (RF), Stewart (1B), Elly De La Cruz (SS), Tyler Stephenson (C), Ke’Bryan Hayes (3B) and Matt McLain (2B).
  • CIN Left Fielder #12
Austin Hays (back) is in the lineup for Tuesday’s NL Wild Card Game 1 matchup against the Dodgers.
Hays missed seven consecutive games to close out the regular season due to back spasms. The 30-year-old corner outfielder is back in left field and batting cleanup against lefty Blake Snell on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. Here’s the full lineup: TJ Friedl (CF), Noelvi Marte (RF), Miguel Andujar (DH), Hays (LF), Spencer Steer (1B), Elly De La Cruz (SS), Tyler Stephenson (C), Ke’Bryan Hayes (3B) and Matt McLain (2B).

TJ Friedl went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in the Reds’ 6-3 win over the Cubs on Saturday.
Friedl knocked a base hit and scored a run in the third inning. He later led off the seventh with a solo homer off Aaron Civale. The 30-year-old outfielder is up to 13 homers and 79 runs scored while slashing .259/.362/.373 across 653 plate appearances.
  • CIN Center Fielder #29
TJ Friedl went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth as the Reds came back to beat the Blue Jays 5-4 on Monday.
Friedl’s double would have scored Matt McLain in addition to Ke’Bryan Hayes and tied the game if it hadn’t gotten wedged in the padding in the right field wall. Fortunately, Noelvi Marte came through afterwards, plating the tying and winning runs with a single through the drawn-in infield. Friedl slumped for much of August, but he now has five hits and three RBI the last two days.
  • CIN 3rd Baseman #16
Noelvi Marte is in center field on Tuesday against the Dodgers.
Marte will make his first appearance in center field on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium with TJ Friedl getting a rare night off. The 23-year-old former top prospect came up as an infielder, but has made the successful transition to the outfield over the last few months, looking like one of Cincinnati’s core foundational pieces to build around long-term.
  • CIN Center Fielder #29
TJ Friedl went 2-for-4 with a double as the Reds were shut out by Paul Skenes and a host of Pirates’ relievers on Thursday evening at PNC Park.
Friedl smacked a two-out double off of Skenes in the fifth inning, but never advanced from there. He also led off the eighth inning with a single off of Ryan Borucki and never moved off of first base. With his two-hit night, the 29-year-old outfielder is now hitting .278/.376/.403 with 10 homers, 37 RBI and 10 stolen bases through his first 480 plate appearances on the year.
