Nationals optioned RHPs Riley Cornelio and Luis Perales to Triple-A Rochester; Reassigned INFs Orelvis Martinez and Sergio Alcantara, RHPs Bryce Montes de Oca and Tyler Baum and C Caleb Lomavita to minor league camp.
We’re now starting to see slightly larger batches of cuts around the league as teams start to trim down their rosters in advance of Opening Day. Cornelio, 25, looked sharp in his two Grapefruit League appearances, posting a 1.80 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and a 7/0 K/BB ratio across five innings of work. He should get an opportunity to debut with the Nationals at some point during the 2026 campaign.

Nationals signed RHP Tyler Baum to a minor league contract.
A 2018 second-round pick who had spent his entire career in the A’s organization, Baum experienced a velocity spike last season, putting him into the 95-98 mph range with his fastball. Unfortunately, it didn’t make him any more effective, as he finished with a 5.50 ERA between Double- and Triple-A. The Nationals will see if they can do more with him and maybe get him to the majors for the first time.
