The surprise here is that all three are ranked outside MLB Pipeline’s top 30 in Detroit’s system at the moment. They’ll all be guarded from selection in next month’s Rule 5 Draft.

Owens, 23, was acquired by the Rangers back in January in the deal that sent outfielder J.P. Martinez to the Braves. The right-hander has been outstanding out of the bullpen at Double-A Frisco this season, registering a 2.80 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 35/9 K/BB ratio across 35 1/3 innings while notching eight saves in 26 appearances. He’ll add quality bullpen depth for the Tigers and could get a shot to show what he can do at the big-league level before the 2024 season is through.

The move frees up a spot on Texas’ 40-man roster to ink veteran closer David Robertson to a deal. The 23-year-old righty made it to Double-A this past season and projects as a middle relief option at the highest level.
