It’s the first trip to the big leagues for the 30-year-old hurler. He posted a 1.56 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 21/8 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings at Triple-A. He’s expected to function in middle relief for the Rays.

The Orioles lit Sturdevant up for five hits and three runs in only two innings of work Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. The 30-year-old carried a 4.80 ERA in 13 outings for the Rays before his demotion.

Sturdevant has put up a 3.93 ERA over 16 relief appearances for the Rays. He’ll return when rosters expand.

Strudevant pitched to a 4.08 ERA and 12/6 K/BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings previous innings with the Rays this season. Prior to the call-up, He had been toiling away in Durham since the middle of July. There is no fantasy intrigue here.

The move clears a bullpen spot for Kevin Jepsen, who was signed by the Rays on Thursday. Sturdevant owns a 4.08 ERA in 17 2/3 innings this year in the majors.

Sturdevant had a 4.80 ERA and 12/5 K/BB ratio in 15 innings of relief earlier this season with Tampa Bay. He will likely pitch in low-leverage situations.

The move was made to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Dana Eveland who was recalled after Sunday’s game. It’s likely that Sturdevant will pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to provide organizational bullpen depth.

Sturdevant was designated for assignment by the Rays last week, but he passed through waivers and will remain with the organization. The 30-year-old had a 3.93 ERA over 16 relief appearances in the majors this season.

The 30-year-old was outrighted off of the Rays 40-man roster in September. Sturdevant did a decent job in 16 appearances for the Rays in 2016, posting a 3.93 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 14/6 K/BB ratio in 18 1/3 innings. With a strong spring, he could compete for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.

Sturdevant was at Triple-A with the Indians in 2015, holding a 3.16 ERA with 30 strikeouts over 31 1/3 relief frames. The 30-year-old has never appeared in the majors.
