Arano has refused the outright minor league assignment and will test the free agent waters this offseason instead of sticking around in Washington. The 28-year-old righty reliever wound up missing the entire 2023 campaign after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery back in June. He’s expected to resume throwing in December.

Arano underwent an MRI after reporting some right shoulder soreness during a bullpen session a couple weeks ago. It certainly sounds like he’s going to be out awhile. He’s been on the shelf since the early stages of spring training due to a right shoulder strain.

Arano suffered the injury a couple of weeks back and has now been ruled out through late May. The 28-year-old figures to pitch in a middle relief role once he’s back to full health.

Arano will be shut down from throwing for at least 10 days before being re-evaluated. The 28-year-old righty reliever made 43 relief appearances last season for the Nationals, finishing with a respectable 4.50 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 44/12 K/BB ratio across 42 innings.

Arano will make just a shade above the major league minimum salary this upcoming season after signing a minor league contract last offseason with the Nationals.

Arano struggled in his first appearance back from the IL on July 22, but he’s pitched four scoreless innings since. For the season, he has a 28/6 K/BB ratio and just two homers allowed in 28 1/3 innings. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him traded tomorrow, but if he stays and Kyle Finnegan goes, he might wind up getting some saves for the Nationals.

Arano has been out since early June with left knee inflammation. He’ll return to middle relief.
