Pennington was cut loose last month after spending all of last season in Baltimore’s system. The 27-year-old southpaw made 16 relief appearances between the Rangers and Royals back in 2024.

The 27-year-old southpaw was designated for assignment on Wednesday, but after passing through waivers unclaimed he’ll continue to function as extra bullpen depth for the O’s at the Triple-A level. That’s assuming that Pennington doesn’t refuse the assignment and elect to hit the open market instead.

Pennington has been jettisoned from Baltimore’s 40-man roster to make room for the club to acquire Luis F. Castillo from the Mariners. The 27-year-old lefty was claimed off waivers last week from the Rangers.

Pennington, 26, did a decent job in 16 appearances at the big league level in 2024 — posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 17/11 K/BB ratio over 18 innings — so it’s a bit surprising to see him sent out so early when there are still unsettled spots in the Rangers’ bullpen. He’ll probably get an opportunity to pitch for the Rangers at some point during the upcoming 2025 season.

Pennington was sent down to Texas with Josh Sborz activated Tuesday. With Sborz needing to go back on the injured list with his shoulder issue, the Rangers will reverse the transaction and having Pennington audition for a spot in 2025.

Pennington came up in August with Josh Sborz going on the injured list. Now that Sborz is back, Pennington is back in the minors. He had a 3.00 ERA, 1.66 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 18 innings with the Rangers.

Pennington is up with Josh Sborz (shoulder) being placed on the injured list. Pennington came over from the Royals in the deal that shipped Michael Lorenzen to the Royals, and he’ll provide the Rangers with some left-handed relief help while with the club.
